The purpose of this profile is to identify the health needs of children in Lewisham and to identify areas where levels of health of children are poorer than elsewhere or better than expected. Identification of at risk groups is part of the focus of this needs assessment. Social factors are important determinants of the health of both children and adults and some analysis of social factors has been included here. Where possible ward level data have been used, however not all data are available or suitable to be used at ward level.

Health needs of children vary at different ages so the profile has considered different age groups. Formal definitions of the upper age of childhood vary according to often legal definitions. In this profile we have used data on children up to 19 years, however, in some cases comparative data is only available for children aged 0-14 years.
